This innovation made from recycled plastics has been awarded a Reddot Winner Product Design 2022.
The design market demands more than ever today sustainable productsIn recent years, several factors such as climate change and the coronavirus have raised consumer awareness, which is increasingly choosing to wear a environmentally conscious lifestyleUltimately, it is in our hands to conserve and protect the planet's natural resources, on which we all depend.
We bet on recycling
Two years ago, just before the coronavirus pandemic, the brand Rolser contacted with Innou to commission us to design a product taking into account the circular economy. It was a shopping cart made practically from all its components recycled. From the very beginning we loved the idea promoted by the founder of Rolser himself, Joan Server, who proposed this line of work with which we share a market vision. In addition, the fact that shopping using a sustainable cartSince it is a mass consumption project, it is something that made a lot of sense to us.
Getting started was a bit complex, since we were working in lockdown and we had to send the samples home to check them and hold virtual meetings with 3D proposals. But even so we managed to overcome the barriers and today, after two years, this sustainable innovation finally sees the light. Its design, with curved lines throughout its chassis, is conceptualized using the minimum number of pieces possible and it is far from the ones we are used to seeing tied up at the entrances of supermarkets. What makes it more different is precisely Its materials, which make it unique in the market.
Materials and structure
The chassis of the cart (2.8kg) is Made from recycled polypropylene (rPP), and the bag fabric (875g) is woven from Recycled PET (rPET), i.e. from recycled plastic bottles. This reduces the environmental impact of the same cart made from polypropylene (PP) and virgin PET by more than 50%. It is easy to assemble and disassemble and the consumer can choose between various bag styles and colours. It has a large capacity of 37 liters.
At the back it has a small bag made of thermal insulation materials, with an extra 7-litre capacity, which is independent as it is separated from the main textile bag by a zipper. In addition, the wheels are removable and they can be changed very easily, to extend their useful life as much as possible or even be able to remove them for storage, optimizing space. The handle has a ergonomic design which makes it easier to push the cart forward, and at the same time it can be pulled backwards by bending the rear axle. We have put a lot of effort into designing a high-quality product designed with every last detail in mind.
Reddot Awards 2022
Once we finally had the product in our hands, we decided present it to the Awards Reddot, one of the awards with the most industrial design prestige worldwide. In April we were informed that the 8 Plus car had been awarded with an award Reddot winner product design 2022 and will be exhibited in Essen, Germany. A gala will be held this June with the rest of the winners in other categories.
The circular economy
At Innou we are betting more than ever on circular economy productsSince our beginnings in 2002 we have been in contact with companies, institutions and masters in sustainable product design to update ourselves, and we continue studying new materials, as more and more brands require it. Today more than ever We are committed to sustainable design. We designers have a great responsibility towards the environment, which at the same time leads us to satisfy the market by working in this direction.
Acknowledgements
From Innou we want thank you for the collaboration with Rolser, for the commission of this disruptive project, contributing and analyzing every detail on both sides. We have understood each other very well throughout the entire process of design, conceptualization and development that we have worked hand in hand with their design, engineering and management department.
Rolser produces and assembles almost all of its products in Pedreguer (Alicante), and this contributes even more to the circular economy by employing 100 local workers. It is a brand that has been More than 50 years in the market and aims to design, manufacture, distribute and export cars and other household products with a excellent quality, and durability at affordable prices for all types of consumers.
Personally I would also like to thank the Innou team: Nekane, Silvia, Diego, Abelardo, who have contributed to making this project a reality, and the other designers who have been part of the studio in these 10 years since our opening.
